I knew it wouldn’t be long before I sewed up some more cushion covers! This time I wanted to make some for our caravan. In a few weeks we will be taking the caravan out of winter hibernation and heading away for a week during the school holidays.

Although our caravan is far from being ‘retro’ or ‘vintage’, I was inspired by a few retro caravan images I have seen lately. This is the end result:

I used the free motion applique technique in order to give the image a ‘sketchy’ looking style. It is great fun and a little bit tricky to start with, but the important thing to remember is that it’s not meant to be perfect! You can find a great tutorial on this technique here.

I find I have to outline my shape at least 4 times, using the last round to try and fill any gaps. For my caravan, instead of making a quilt sandwich I used an embroidery hoop upside down with stabiliser on the back of the fabric. I find it much easier to control – free motion is fast!

The fabric I used for the rest of the cushion is some I have had in my stash for a long time – it’s nice to be finally using it - Odyssea by MoMo for Moda. I used the shell prints for the front and a colourful coral print for the back.

Of course, one cushion is not enough so there will be another joining this one as soon as I find the time to sew it together
